It’s raining, part 2

We woke up this morning in Astoria, OR to the sound of rain. I like the sound of rain, but it wasn’t what I was hoping for today. We just took the time to go over our planned route tomorrow, and to reorganize all our stuff. By afternoon it had stopped and we were able to go for a walk. I took a pic of the bridge we crossed yesterday. One pic is in the morning, when the clouds and rain obscured its distant reach, the second is later in the day, and you can see farther.

It’s called the Astoria – Megler bridge. It is the longest continuous bridge in North America. It is 4.1 miles long, and crosses the widest and most powerful river mouth on the continent. We saw a sand bar with seals lying on it in the middle of the river, but giant cargo ships go under the raised parts of the bridge. Pilots who have been trained to know the vagaries of this river guide the huge ships through to avoid the shallows. Talk about a stressful job!

We got the chance to walk part of the bike trip planned for tomorrow. Sterling is going to ride first. He has to cross a bridge over Young’s Bay/River. I’m not a fan of bridges, or at least not of driving over them. I always feel like I’m going to drive off the edge, or something crazy. Taking a bike across didn’t sound wise. So Sterling offered to take the first ride. We plan to meet at Cannon Beach where we will trade places. He will drive, and I will ride from Cannon Beach to Barview Jetty campground. We both will have ridden about 31 miles at the end of the day! There will be rain again tomorrow, luckily we wont melt!

So glad to hear from you!
