Jonesboro, AR

Hello dear friends and family! We got up this morning and drove to Memphis. I like bluegrass, but Ster’s heart is held by the blues. So we had to visit both Nashville and Memphis. By rights we should have spent more time in Memphis, and seen a show, but it’s so HOT. We always think we can get a little exercise in and walk to whatever place we want to see. It doesn’t work out well. We did make it to Beal Street, where BB King’s Blues Club is. Here are a few pics.

There is also this pyramid in downtown Memphis. It is a nod to the cities namesake in Egypt. It was originally built as a sports arena, but that didn’t work out, so now it’s a Bass Pro Shop mega store, a luxury wilderness hotel with an indoor cypress swamp with alligators! and a glass observation deck at the top.

And, if that’s not enough, they also have a theatre named for Orpheus, the Greek musician and poet who could charm all living things.

We stopped in at a small restaurant and got some delicious food. While we were there we noticed some photographs they were auctioning off.

This was actually a painting, but I liked it!

This is from a famous fight between Muhamad Ali on the right and Joe Frasier on the left.

This was next to the pic of the fight. I like what it says.

Also, Memphis is on the banks of the Mississippi River! The Mississippi is a big deal, both geographically and culturally. It is the second longest river in the US. It flows through, or borders 10 states. The longest river in north America, the Missouri flows into it. The Mississippi’s watershed drains all or part of 32 US states and two Canadian provinces between the Rockies and the Appalachians. It also figures prominently in US literature. Native Americans lived beside the river long before Europeans arrived. She has been a part of our history time and again.

She is a big deal!

This is where we finally got close enough to the river to put my feet in!

And here are my feet!

And, here we are looking a little hot and tired, with the river behind us!

Oh! I almost forgot! My granddaughter Anna would be dissapointed!

The restaurant also had a pic of this famous lady!

I recall watching Daddy watch the Ali Fraser fight. He loved boxing especially heavy weight boxing. Such a fun trip you guys are having. I’m so happy for you to be enjoying each other as much as the places you are seeing.

    Memphis is where it’s at!

LIke Sterling I love blues and blues based music. All the best rock songs are blues extensions.

The pic of Cash is so weird. Seeing Johnny so young while Elvis looks like he always does, kind of affects an old guy.

I know I had to “wash my hands” as dad would say, the two times I drove past that big-deal of a river.

  3. Memphis looks like a cool place. Too bad literally not cool! I guess the best time to go would be springtime as far as weather goes.

I’m glad you got to get your feet in the Mississippi!
